Staying Prepared: Winter Weather

Winter weather can strike at any time, even when it's 60 degrees the day before! While there is no need to panic about upcoming storms, it is a great reminder to stay prepared year-round for emergencies if it ever has to come to one. Being aware of how the weather is predicted to change is an essential step in staying prepared. Most phones' generic weather apps don't cut it when it comes to the details of exact times and precipitation levels. We recommend the KY3 Weather App. Download it here.

This app is a great tool for checking road conditions and their clearance levels in case you do have to go out during or after the storm. Download it here.

Fully charge your phone.

Make sure your phone has plenty of charge in case the power goes out and you need to make an emergency call. Powerbanks are also a great investment for times when electricity is unavailable. Make sure you charge these power banks beforehand as well!

Fill up your tank.

It's always a good idea to make sure you have enough gas to get around, especially during the cold winter months. Keep at least half a tank of gas in your car at all times in case you are to break down or need to make an emergency trip without being able to stop.

Stock your first aid kit.

While this is something that you should have stocked and ready at all times of the year, it is most important to have it full when you may be stuck in the house for a period of time.

Stock your prescriptions.

Make sure you have at least a week's worth of your needed prescriptions going into the storm. 

Keep your faucet dripping.

To avoid having your pipes freeze, leave your faucet on a cold water drip.

Examine your yard.

If you see any weak limbs that could be likely to fall on your home or roof, make sure to trim them.

Invest in a generator.

If your power goes out and you don't have a fireplace, you may need a generator and electric heater to keep your home warm.
